Question by : Why has neither Switzerland or Norway joined the European Union?
I find it weird considering most of their bordering countries are members of the European Union

For the same reason England has not fully joined either….They have far more to lose than to gain.

Switzerland is one of the most tightly-controlled and secretive economies in the world…it would be like making the CIA a publicly-traded company and asking to disclose their financials.

Norway is rich in natural resources and that wealth is reserved for the benefit of their relatively small and homogeneous population. Why would they want to encourage workers from other EU countries to take from that pie?

There’s a reason why many of the countries so often touted as having “successful socialism” also happen to have the tightest economic and cultural controls….they tend to go hand in hand.

Question by firewomen: Norway received telephone message from Russia?
saying they are cutting all ties with NATO and its members. How will this affect the US in needing their help with say Iran and other areas in Europe.
If the US does not need the help of Russia then why did they ask for help in dealing with Iran….
since Russia deals with Iran the US thinks they have an influence on Iran and want Russia to help control Iran.

  1. Norway did not want to loose its rights to it own territorial waters in relation to oil and fishing rights, or have them ruled under the EU common fisheries policy. Switzerland i’m unclear about but i’d say it has something to do with its gold standard currency and strong banking industry.
In my own opinion they both made the correct choice

  2. Due to something that starts with a “M” and ends with -oney. They would lose money by joining, as they would have to share their wealth with countries like Greece. That is the reason why their economies are booming, actually profiting from the Euro crisis making them the only countries in Europe with a strong economy, and therefore foreign investments.

  3. Switzerland has had a long history of neutrality and independence. Both are also rich and would be paying through the through the nose if they joined. They both have negotiated trade agreements meaning they get all the same economic benefits with out be bound in politically.

  4. the USA does not need Russia, and Russia does not need the USA.

well, the USA and Poland didn’t back down, we are putting missiles in Poland

i wonder if Russia will follow through with their threat about attacking Poland. the deal is signed, i think Russia is all talk

  5. The Us is asking Russia for permission to attack countries like Iraq and Iran because Russia has interest such as trade with these countries and that could hurt their economy and if Russia said no don’t attack we will defend them well then? Russia may not want nato to put a blockade on Iran because Russia gets oil and other things from Iran. I think we need to let France, England, Germany and the rest of Europe handle it’s own problems.
